GUITARIST / SINGER / WRITER
Al Hodge is an International known singer/composer living in his native Cornwall.
Having started his first band at the age of thirteen, Al left school and turned professional at just sixteen, joining popular UK west country band `
The Onyx`
who gigged throughout Britain and were frequently featured on BBC Radio 1 sessions.

1963

MADE HIS DEBUT AT THE BODMIN COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE DURING A MUSIC FESTIVAL AT THE SCHOOL IN BODMIN.CORNWALL,UK. PLAYED 'FOOT TAPPER' AN INSTRUMENTAL BY THE SHADOWS! (SOLO IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL)

JOINED 'THE JAGUARS' (A LOCAL CORNISH BAND) AS RHYTHM GUITARIST AND WENT ON TO BECOME THE 'LEAD GUITARIST'.

1965/6

Spent his time playing around Cornwall with 'The Jaguars' 'I

REALISING THAT 'WANTING TO BE A PAINTER AND DECORATOR WHEN HE LEFT SCHOOL WASN'T GOING TO BE AS MUCH FUN AS TOURING WITH A BAND, AL JOINED THE 'ONYX' - A CORNISH BAND WHO TOURED THE UK AND EUROPE FOR SEVERAL YEARS / WITH APPEARANCES ON RADIO ONE BEING A REGULAR OCCURRENCE. THE BAND RECORDED 7 SINGLES ON THE PYE LABEL.

1970

CAME BACK TO CORNWALL TO PLAY WITH GINHOUSE A LOCAL CORNISH (Bodmin) BAND.

1971

JOINED THE SAWMILLS STUDIO IN GOLANT CORNWALL AS A SESSION MUSICIAN. PLAYED ON MANY SESSION ALBUMS AND SINGLES INCLUDING - CLIFFORD 'T' WARD - SPLINTER - LESLEY DUNCAN - MARTIN BEST ETC:

 

11975 HOOKED UP WITH THE FLETCHER / FLETT WRITING TEAM AND FORMED 'ROGUE' WITH GUY FLETCHER AND JOHN HODKINSON.
RECORDED 3 ALBUMS FOR C.B.S. AND ENJOYED HITS THROUGHOUT EUROPE.

1978 FORMED THE 'MECHANICS' WITH AL EDEN, DRUMMER AND STUDIO MANAGER, AND DAVE QUINN, BASS PLAYER AND STARTED LIFE AT THE 'SAWMILLS STUDIO' IN GOLANT, FOWEY, CORNWALL, AS THE HOUSE SESSION BAND.
APPEARED ON THE LEGENDARY 101 CLUB ALBUMS WITH LEADING  PERFORMERS OF THE TIME AND SIGNED A RECORDING DEAL WITH 'BRONZE' RECORDS. OWNED BY THE MIGHTY (FINE ) JERRY BRON.
WORKED WITH TOP PRODUCERS TONY COX  (YES)  JERRY BOYS  (RY COODER) AND JOHN CORNFIELD  (SUPERGRASS)  AND LONG TIME FRIEND AND ENGINEER SIMON FRASER  (MECHANICS)

Late 70's

RECORDED SEVERAL ALBUMS AT THE SAWMILLS STUDIO INCLUDING AN ALBUM WITH THE LATE GREAT CLIFFORD 'T' WARD www.cliffordtward.info I HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF CLIFFORD AND OUR BAND REHEARSING AND RECORDING HIS CELEBRATED SONGS. CLIFFORD WAS A GREAT WRITER AND A LOVELY MAN.

1980 THE 'MECHANICS' TEAMED UP WITH 'LEO SAYER' TO FORM HIS   BACKING BAND - 2 WORLD TOURS FOLLOWED. A LONG RUNNING BBC2 TV SERIES  'THIS IS LEO'  WAS EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL  ALSO RECORDED WITH LEO AND FEATURED ON SOME OF HIS MANY ALBUMS. WORKED WITH - LINDA RONSTADT - RANDY CRAWFORD - BILL COSBY  (60 shows in 30 days at the Las Vagas Hilton)   VANESSA WILLIAMS.

1985
RETURNED TO CORNWALL AND FORMED A WRITING PARTNERSHIP WITH MICHAEL-DAN-EHMIG (LARGER THAN LIFE SUCCESSFUL  AMERICAN WRITER) RESULTING IN A PLATINUM ALBUM FOR SALES OF HIT 'ROCK 'N' ROLL MERCENARIES'  RECORDED BY 'MEATLOAF AND JOHN PARR. FORMED  'WORKFORCE' WITH MICHAEL DAN EHMIG.

1986 SPENT THE NEXT FOUR YEARS COMMUTING BETWEEN 'TORTOLA' (BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS) AND THE U.K. WORKING WITH HIS LONG TIME FRIEND AND BASS PLAYER DEREK FITZPATRICK AT HIS CLUB ON TORTOLA -THE TAMARIND CLUB.' SURFING' BEING VERY HIGH ON THE AGENDA,.SURFED APPLE, AND CANE GARDEN BAY TILL THE WATER RAN  DRY !

1987 WROTE 'SOME KINDA LOVE' FOR RICK ASTLEY-A HIT IN JAPAN AND ALSO USED AS THE MUSIC 1990/95. TOOK TIME OFF TO WRITE NEW MATERIAL, with Andrew Murray/Dave Quinn and Matt Richards.

1995/8 Recording sessions and touring the UK.

1999/2000 MONTH BRITISH TOUR WITH LEGENDARY FEMALE BLUES SINGER 'ELKIE BROOKS'

2000. THIS YEAR AL RECORDED AN ALBUM IN NEW YORK WITH HIT PRODUCERS-WITH BOB ALLECCA & MICHAEL BROWN [producers of CHRISTINA AGUILERA, MARIAH CAREY]

2001 WROTE MUSIC FOR ABC NETWORK PROGRAMME...WITH PRODUCER/ DIRECTOR JOHN DAUER OF SHOTGUN PICTURES.

2001WRITING AND RECORDING WITH THE 'QUEEN OF ROCK' SUZI QUATRO ON HER NEW ALBUM.http://www.ozemail.com.au/~suziq/

2001 BECAME A MEMBER OF MANBAND....which due to bad management fell on it's arse!!

2002 SESSIONS WITH ANDREW MURRAY/CHRISTIAN BALLARD ON VARIOUS RECORDING PROJECTS INCLUDING RIK WALLER'S NEW ALBUM.

2003 WROTE THE MUSIC TO A NEW 6 PART CARLTON TV SERIES - 'A NATIONAL HERITAGE' PRODUCED BY MATT RICHARDS - SCREENED 'JAN 2003' - GIGS AND RECORDING THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR. PLAYED AT THE 'CROPREDY FESTIVAL' THIS YEAR WITH THE MECHANICS.

COMPOSED THE MUSIC FOR A NEW SHORT FILM, PRODUCED BY MARIE AND JOHN MACNEILL ENTITLED 'PRIME FILLET' - TO BE SCREENED AT THE CORNWALL FILM FESTIVAL (15/16 november 2003) AT THE FALMOUTH ARTS CENTRE IN FALMOUTH, CORNWALL,UK.

2005

SPENT THE FIRST PART OF THE YEAR TEACHING AND GIGGING.

CURRENTLY(Aint easy!...not like a broken finger nail)

RECOVERING FROM A MAJOR OPERATION ( brain tumour!!.... major enough?) AND READY, WAITING, AND WANTING TO START GIGGING AGAIN....WHENEVER. (IT'S GONNA BE A WHILE YET!)
